This project is based on Céline Park’s long-term anthropological research on objectophilia, developed through interviews, case studies, and the analysis of cultural practices surrounding human–object relationships. Approaching objectophilia from an anthropological perspective, Park examined how relationships with objects are not merely individual preferences, but function as social practices structured by rituals, norms, and shared meanings. This project is one of a total of four object-based series that emerged from this research, and was presented as a 20-minute performance alongside The Object Right at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, in 2018.

The project is grounded in the speculative question:

“What kinds of criteria and social systems would emerge if the rules governing marriage rituals between humans and objects were enforced more strictly?”

In existing objectophilic communities, individuals often adopt conventional Western wedding customs—wearing wedding rings, bridal gowns, or tuxedos. After marriage, they may engage in relationships with other objects, divorce, or remarry, practices that closely resemble human marital structures.

A well-known example is Erika Eiffel, who married the Eiffel Tower in 2007, maintained a long-distance relationship, divorced in 2017, and later remarried another object. In some cases, multiple individuals may marry the same object. Park identified these cultural practices as strikingly similar to human marriage systems, including issues of monogamy, divorce, ownership, and relational ethics. Through anthropological comparison, the project connects objectophilic practices with contemporary debates surrounding marriage, partnership, and social legitimacy.

Building on this research, the work imagines a dystopian society in which objectophiles must meet strict qualifications and institutional requirements in order to marry an object. The project designs the social rules, ceremonial procedures, and mechanical systems necessary to sustain such a society. Rather than documenting a culture as it exists, the project functions as a speculative, research-based design experiment that reconstructs anthropological insights into an alternative social system.

Céline Park led the overall conceptual framework, scenario development, object and machine design, costume, and set design. The project was realized through collaboration with choreographers, sound designers, and scientists from Imperial College London, resulting in a performance-based work that integrates anthropological research, speculative design, and embodied narrative.

본 프로젝트는 셀린 박이 사물 기호증(Objectophilia)에 대한 장기적인 인류학적 연구를 바탕으로 진행한 작업으로, 인터뷰와 사례 조사, 문화적 관습 분석을 통해 사물 기호증자들의 관계 방식과 의례, 규범을 관찰·기록하는 데서 출발했다. 셀린 박은 이 연구를 통해 사물과 인간의 관계가 개인적 취향의 문제가 아니라, 하나의 사회적 실천이자 문화적 체계로 작동하고 있음을 인류학적 관점에서 분석했다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 연구를 포함해 진행한 총 네 개의 오브제 시리즈 중 하나이다. 해당 시리즈는〈The Object Right〉와 함께 2018년 영국 런던 V&A(Victoria and Albert Museum)에서 전시된 20분 분량의 공연 형식 작품으로 발표되었다.

이 작업은 “만약 사물과의 결혼 의식이 사회적으로 더욱 엄격한 규칙과 제도를 갖게 된다면, 어떤 기준과 시스템이 형성될 것인가?” 라는 가상의 시나리오를 기반으로 디자인되었다. 사물 기호증자들은 실제로 결혼 반지를 착용하거나 웨딩드레스와 턱시도를 입는 등 전통적인 서구식 결혼 의례를 차용하며, 결혼 이후에도 다른 사물과 관계를 맺거나 이혼 후 재혼하는 등 인간 사회의 결혼 문화와 유사한 양상을 보인다.

대표적인 사례로, 2007년 에펠탑과 결혼해 널리 알려진 에리카 에펠은 결혼 이후 장거리 관계를 유지하다 2017년 이혼한 뒤 다른 사물과 재혼한 바 있다. 또한 하나의 사물과 여러 사람이 결혼하는 사례 역시 존재하는데, 이러한 문화적 양상은 인간 사회의 결혼 제도, 일부일처제, 이혼과 재혼, 관계의 소유와 윤리 문제와 밀접하게 닮아 있다. 셀린 박은 이러한 사례들을 인류학적 비교 분석의 대상으로 삼아, 현대 사회에서 논의되고 있는 결혼 제도와 관계의 규범, 권리와 자격 문제를 사물 기호증 문화와 병치시키는 시나리오를 구성했다.

작품은 사물 기호증자가 사물과 결혼하기 위해 엄격한 자격 심사와 절차를 요구받는 디스토피아적 사회를 가정하고, 그 사회를 구성하는 규칙과 제도, 기계 장치, 의례적 행위를 디자인하는 방식으로 전개된다. 이는 특정 집단의 문화를 관찰·기록하는 데 그치지 않고, 인류학적 연구에서 도출한 문화적 규범과 사회적 구조를 사변적 디자인을 통해 재구성하는 실험이다. 시나리오 설계, 오브제 및 기계 디자인, 코스튬과 세트 기획 전반은 셀린 박이 총괄했으며, 안무가와 사운드 디자이너 등 다양한 예술가들, 그리고 임페리얼 칼리지 런던의 과학 교수진과의 협업을 통해 공연 형식의 작업으로 완성되었다.
