A love hotel is a place for discrete intimacy but also a place for intensive physical and mental exercise. How might our bodies change, struggle or even adapt with varying conditions around us? For example, during the Carboniferous period, ancestors of the dragonfly Meganeura grew up to seventy-five centimeters due to the huge concentration of oxygen in the air, a tremendous boon to the insect but high levels of oxygen would be toxic to our fragile bodies. Recent figures speculate that around 35% of children are now conceived by In Vitro Fertilisation. The world around us and our reproductive technologies have given rise to new ideas of what sex is or could be and where it stands between our biologically-programmed needs and inclinations and our human fetishes and desires. Perhaps the Extreme Environments Love Hotel might give rise to new evolutions and mutations of the human body and sex and give it a brand new role away from any of these historical precedents.

They then board small dinghies that float through a water-filled space, eventually arriving in a surreal environment covered with silver balloons. There, they encounter a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and experience a spectacular sonic boom of light and sound, creating the sensation of being inside an actual particle collision. Within families that carry the mutant gene, the non-carrier child often suffers from survivor’s guilt, as guilt is a way of validating family responsibility through compassion. It presents the user with a cycle: one bulb contains colloidal gold poison, while the other contains the antidote (dimercapol – chelation therapy). Cohen created a hypothetical scenario and technology to eliminate ’genetic mutations‘ and their effects. This object is designed for families destined to inherit genetic mutations. It contains the equipment necessary to measure, mix, and administer a cycle of dissolved genetic gold and nano-gold concentrated chemotherapy (including TNF, PNG, and a magnetic vortex mechanism measurement funnel). Morphologically, it includes a custom-made needle designed to be inserted into the navel, consciously emphasizing maternal instincts. This portrays parents as intentionally controlling the mutant gene and taking on a role in combating cancer, described as ’responsible individuals controlling nature.‘ This project is also related to epigenetics, which asserts that genes are influenced by the environment. This project points out the tendency of people who have lost a body part but still have sensation in that area to view phantom pain as a disorder, to be fixed through correction and therapy, and instead proposes to use it as an opportunity to unleash the potential of our body‘s poetic function. When we lose a limb, our minds often experience a phantom sensation. Treatment for this often focuses solely on practical ”recovery“ and overlooks the poetic function of the body. But what if you could record and archive your illusions so that they could be awakened on demand? In this project, the phantom owner is given a unique personal appendage that is invisible to others and gives them extraordinary hyperabilities. A novel peripheral nerve interface allows regenerating axons to grow into microchannels incorporating embedded electrodes. This neural implant enables sensations to be inserted to the device, or for activity to be recorded from movements. Could we use this technology to record illusions of the mind? What if our imagination could be captured through our nerves? When the prosthetic is worn, the recorded hallucination data is transmitted, allowing the nerves to recreate the telescoped phantom hand, the fourth feet or the split arm.

DIALYSIS SHEEP This project is futuristic research that explores new possibilities beyond the value and abilities recognized by society in sheep. Cohen studied and staged a situation where patients suffering from kidney failure receive blood from sheep every evening. This project does not aim to hope for such a future but uses the depiction of such a future to critically examine various issues of modern society through speculative design. Genetic material from a patient’s blood sample is cut out of the regions that code for blood production and immune response. They then extract genetic material from the nuclei of somatic cells taken from sheep to replace the corresponding regions of the sheep genome. This recombinant DNA is inserted into the nucleus of a sheep egg cell and implanted into a surrogate ewe. The surrogate ewe gives birth to a transgenic lamb. During the day, the sheep roams freely in the patient’s backyard, grazing on grass, drinking water, and purifying its kidneys. At night, the sheep is placed on a platform next to the patient’s bed, and the its kidneys are connected to the patient’s fistula through blood vessels. During the night, a peristaltic pump removes waste from the patient’s blood, filters it through the sheep’s kidneys, and returns the purified blood to the patient. This process repeats throughout the nicht, with the sheep excreting the toxins through urine.

This work proposes a system in which such animals, instead of facing an uncertain fate after retirement, live a second life as ‘alternative organ donor animals.’ The scenario presents using transgenic farm animals or retired dogs(from racing, dog shows, hunting competitions, etc.) as life support ‘devices’ for patients in need of kidneys or respiratory assistance as an alternative to inhumane medical therapies. Can transgenic animals function as entire biological mechanisms rather than simply supplying parts? Can humans live parasitically, utilizing the bodily functions of other organisms? RESPIRATORY DOG Greyhounds are bred by the racing industry. Born from the mating of purebred parents, they are trained to chase lures during the first 12 months. For the next 3-5 years, they live in kennels and race weekly to generate profits. Instead of being euthanized, greyhounds receive free training to become ‘respiratory assistance dogs.’ After training, the greyhounds are adopted by patients who rely on mechanical ventilators, starting their second career as a respiratory ‘device.’

When fully developed, they are stripped like a walnut from its shell or corn from its husk, ready for assembly. Shops evolved into factory farms, with licensed products grown where sold. Large items take time to grow and are more expensive while small ones are more affordable. The postal service delivers lightweight seed-packets for domestic manufacturers. Using biology for the production of consumer goods has reversed the idea of industrial standards, introducing diversity and softness into a realm that once was dominated by heavy manufacturing.
